7 and 8 Day Big Whale Expeditions
Gray Whales of San Ignacio Lagoon and Marine Wildlife of the Sea of Cortez
Experience two extraordinary sides of Baja California in one guided journey. Our Big Whale Expeditions combine the friendly Gray Whales of San Ignacio Lagoon with sea safaris, island landscapes, and abundant marine wildlife in Loreto Bay National Park.
Depending on your selected departure, you will spend seven or eight days traveling between Campo Cortez Ecolodge and the Sea of Cortez, with multiple whale-watching excursions, comfortable accommodations, naturalist guides, and carefully arranged transportation throughout your journey.
Two Coasts. One Extraordinary Journey.
Few journeys allow you to experience two marine environments as different and remarkable as San Ignacio Lagoon and the Sea of Cortez. At San Ignacio Lagoon, Pacific Gray Whales gather in protected waters where mothers care for their calves before beginning their long migration north. From Campo Cortez, you will venture onto the lagoon in small pangas led by experienced local captains and Baja Ecotours naturalists.
The Gray Whales of San Ignacio Lagoon are known for their curiosity. At times, whales may approach the boats closely or remain nearby for extended periods. Every encounter is different, and all close interactions are initiated by the whales themselves.
In Loreto, the experience opens into the vast waters of the Sea of Cortez. Guided sea safaris explore Loreto Bay National Park in search of Blue Whales, Humpback Whales, Fin Whales, dolphins, sea lions, seabirds, and other marine life.
Wildlife sightings vary with the season, weather, sea conditions, and animal activity. The unpredictability is part of what makes every Sea of Cortez safari unique.
Together, these destinations offer a richer view of Baja California—its whales, islands, desert mountains, coastal communities, and extraordinary biodiversity.

San Ignacio Lagoon: Life Among the Gray Whales
San Ignacio Lagoon is a protected winter breeding and nursery area for Pacific Gray Whales. Mothers and calves rest in the sheltered waters before beginning their long migration north.
During your stay at Campo Cortez, you will join multiple whale-watching excursions aboard small pangas operated by experienced local captains. A Baja Ecotours naturalist accompanies each outing to help you understand the whales, their behavior, the lagoon, and the surrounding ecosystem.
The Gray Whales of San Ignacio Lagoon are known for their curiosity. At times, they may approach the boats closely or remain nearby for extended periods. Gray Whales are wild animals, so a particular behavior or close encounter can never be guaranteed.
Our captains and guides follow the lagoon’s wildlife-viewing regulations and allow each whale to determine the distance and nature of the interaction.
Between excursions, enjoy freshly prepared meals, naturalist-led activities, shorelinewalks, birdwatching, tide pool exploration, photography, Happy Hour, evening presentations, or quiet time overlooking the lagoon.
Loreto and the Sea of Cortez
Framed by the Sierra de la Giganta mountains, Loreto offers an entirely different view of Baja California. Guests stay near the waterfront and venture into Loreto Bay National Park on guided sea safaris.
Often called the “Aquarium of the World,” the Sea of Cortez supports an extraordinary variety of marine life. Depending on the season and conditions, wildlife sightings may include Blue Whales, Humpback Whales, Fin Whales, dolphins, sea lions, sea turtles, rays, and numerous species of seabirds.
Your itinerary may also include an island excursion, opportunities to photograph Loreto’s dramatic volcanic landscapes, and time to enjoy the town’s historic center and waterfront malecón.
The number and type of Loreto excursions vary by departure. Please review your individual itinerary for the activities included with your selected trip.
